If one were to visit any Japanese city, town or village, one of the first things he or she might notice is the organic nature with which buildings and streets which weave throughout them have been developed. Unlike arranged on a grid, Japanese urban planning tends towards the spontaneous; buildings erected over time dictate how arterial traffic conduits are arranged and not the other way around. Often times, roads will weave in irregular patterns, and occasionally will fork in two directions, forming a ‘Y intersection’.
